A Short History


Family

Brian Greig was born in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1966. He lived in Lancelin, a coastal village two hours north of Perth and attended school and University in Perth.

Education

Brian studied teaching a Murdoch University and graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Brian was involved in student politics campaigning against campus amalgamations, tertiary fees and a roadway through local wetlands. In 1986, he helped establish the Australian National Union of Students and in 1988 was elected to the Student Guild.

Equal Opportunity

Brian became a prominent spokesperson for WA’s gay and lesbian community, campaigning strongly for human rights reforms. He helped establish the Australian Council for Lesbian and Gay Rights for which he was national spokesperson from 1993 to 1995. In January 1998, Brian received the Australian Democrats’ Memorial Chris Carter Award in recognition of his work on gay and lesbian human rights.

Local Government

In 1995, Brian was elected councillor to the multicultural Town of Vincent. During his tenure, he helped shape this new municipality into a green, socially responsible and progressive Council, serving on its Arts, Heritage and Aboriginal Advisory Committees.

Political Background

Brian has worked with several Members of Parliament including State Members, Federal Ministers and Senators. In October of the same year, Brian was elected to represent Western Australia in the Senate. Brian’s portfolio responsibilities have included Law and Justice, Forests, Fisheries, Transport, Aviation, Sexuality Issues, Information Technology, Youth Affairs, Consumer Affairs and Health.

Campaigns

Since his election to the Senate in 1998 Brian has campaigned in the Senate through legislation and parliamentary procedures in support of Anti-Genocide legislation, against the mandatory sentencing of juveniles, the clearfelling of old growth forests and against the introduction of draconian and severe anti-terrorism laws which are an affront to Australians’ civil rights.

Committees

Senator Greig is an active member of the Joint Statutory Committee on the Australian Crime Commission; is Deputy Chair of the Community Affairs Legislation Committee and participating member on the References Committee; is a member of the Environment, Communications, Information Technology and the Arts Legislation Committee for Information Technology (and participating member on References committee for Information Technology); the Legal and Constitutional Legislation and References Committees and the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation & References Committees, (participating member for Fisheries portfolio). Senator Greig is also a member of the Presiding Officers Information Technology Group.
